Harry YOUNG - died 7th April 1918

Rifleman 654313, Harry Young of the 21st Bn, London Regt (First Surrey Rifles)

The War diary for the First Surrey Rifles records that they were in Bouzincourt at the start of April 1918. On 4th April the Battalion was moved to billets in Senlis. On 5th April the village was shelled (HE Shrapnel, Gas) from 7am and the battalion stood to all day. On 6th April the diary reports Gas Shelling with 66 casualties including 2/Lt J M Allison. At 8pm on 7th April they moved back into line in front of Bouzincourt.

He was awarded the British and Victory Medals

The number 654313 suggests an enlistment date of May 1917

The War Diary for no 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital records that they were in Doullens with the following entries from April 1918:-
6th. Admissions 1805, Discharges 1281. The tunnels have all been cleaned out and prepared for the patients in case of an air raid. Electric lights have been installed.
7th. Admissions 619, Discharges 1429. 12 other ranks, CAMC, taken on strength this date. Usual Sunday Service held

The Register of Soldiers effects, entry 699888, Young, Harry, 1/21 Battalion London Regiment, Pte 654313, died 6.14.18, 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital, Doullens, France. £3.6.2 to father Benjamin (19.11.18). There was also a War Gratuity of £6.10.0 paid to father Benjamin on 11/12/19
