St Eloois & Poperinghe, 2015

Henry Neville Bascombe HARRISON - died 16th March 1915

Death and Burial
March 1915

The war diary records that he was wounded (shot) in the area of St Eloois, Belgium. The photographs below were taken by me at that location on 25 June 2015. The crater is now overgrown and filled with water but there is still a bunker there. Access to the site is by a key code from the Tourist Office in Ieper. There are photos of the area during the war at the roadside outside, a memorial to the actions in the area and a field gun by the roundabout in the village

He is buried in Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery in plot II. K. 50
This is a small cemetery with about 450 burials. Access is down a small path between houses not far from the town centre.
We visited the cemetery on 25 June 2015 and put a poppy cross on his grave. His headstone carried the inscription:-

THIS IS
THE BEAUTY OF MANHOOD
TO DIE FOR A GOOD CAUSE
We took the following photos of the cemetery and his grave and also noticed a headstone to a Chinese soldier inscribed:-
A GOOD REPUTATION
ENDURES FOREVER"

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
