Frank ALDRED - died 15th September 1916

Death and Burial
September 1916

The Regimental War Diary records that he was killed in an attack on German Trenches in BOULEAUX WOODS on 15 September 1916. The photographs below were taken by me on the road by the woods on 20 June 2015.

He is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial on Pier and Face 9 D and 16 B. There are 6 other soldiers with the ALDRED surname commemorated on this memorial

The memorial is located just outside the village of Thiepval and is visible from miles around. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave.
We visited the cemetery on a very wet 22 June 2015 but were unable to access the memorial due to overrunning renovation works. We put a poppy cross, inscribed "Frank Aldred RIP" on the grave of an unknown soldier in the cemetery beside the memorial-
We took the following photos of the memorial and grave.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
